How the forecast works

Activity × Darkness × Clear sky × Moon

= an honest GO / NO-GO. Darkness and cloud are hard gates — a brilliant aurora behind cloud scores near zero, exactly as it should.

Darkness

Hard gate — no dark sky, no aurora. Daylight and deep twilight wash it out completely.

Cloud

Hard gate — cloud is an opaque lid. Even a roaring display behind thick cloud scores near zero.

Moonlight

Penalty — a bright moon dims faint displays. It can tip a marginal night from "go" to "no-go".

Solar activity

The engine — vital, but never enough on its own. Activity alone does not make a show.

Aurora forecasts are guidance only — the Northern Lights are natural, unpredictable and never guaranteed. The Tonight Score combines available space-weather, darkness, cloud and moon data, but conditions can change quickly and data can be delayed or incomplete. Always make your own judgement before heading out at night: check local weather, roads, access and safety advice, dress for the cold, and don't enter unsafe or remote areas unprepared.
